Heat pump noise and the location of the outdoor unit

Illustration for the article: Heat pump noise and the location of the outdoor unit

The noise of a heat pump comes mainly from the outdoor unit – from the fan and compressor. Modern units are quiet, but how they are perceived in practice is strongly influenced by their location. A well-chosen place often makes a bigger difference than the choice between two models.

What noise depends on

  • the output at which the unit is currently running – in frost it runs at a higher output,
  • the design and model – you will find the data in the technical data sheets,
  • the surroundings – walls and corners reflect and amplify sound,
  • the fixing – without damping, vibrations travel into the structure.

How to read noise data

Manufacturers state the sound power (a property of the unit) and sometimes the sound pressure at a certain distance (what you hear). Sound pressure falls with distance. Compare the same type of figure.

Principles for positioning the outdoor unit

  • not under bedroom windows – yours or the neighbours’,
  • not in narrow spaces between walls or in corners,
  • with free space for airflow,
  • on a firm base or bracket with vibration damping,
  • with drainage for defrost water, so that it does not freeze on a path in winter,
  • as close to the plant room as possible – Monobloc or split heat pump: the differences.

Consideration for neighbours

On densely built-up plots around Bratislava, the location of the outdoor unit is an important part of the design. We will go through it with you before installation.

Indoor unit

The indoor unit is usually in a plant room, boiler room or storeroom. Its noise is low in normal operation.

We will propose a location

Send us photos of the plot and house. We will propose a location for a Daikin heat pump with regard to noise and operation. Contact · Daikin heat pumps
