A heat pump and photovoltaics: why it is worth combining them

Illustration for the article: A heat pump and photovoltaics: why it is worth combining them

A heat pump needs electricity and photovoltaics produce it. Combining the two therefore makes sense – part of the energy for heating, hot water and cooling can come from your own roof. However, you also need to know the limitations, especially in winter.

When production and consumption overlap

  • Summer – photovoltaics produce the most and the heat pump can heat water and provide cooling.
  • Spring and autumn – production is still decent and the heat demand is lower.
  • Winter – the heat demand is highest and production lowest. At that time the house takes most of its energy from the grid.

How to use as much of your own electricity as possible

  • schedule hot water heating for the hours of greatest production,
  • use cooling during the day in summer,
  • a battery helps shift some of the energy to the evening,
  • smart controls can increase consumption when there is a surplus.

The options for connecting to photovoltaics depend on the specific model and controls – we will check them during the design.

What to consider in the design

  • size the photovoltaics according to the total consumption of the house, including the heat pump,
  • do not design a larger heat pump just because of the photovoltaics,
  • bear in mind that photovoltaics will not cover heating in winter.

A subsidy for both

The Zelená domácnostiam programme supports both heat pumps and photovoltaic panels. The current conditions change – read more in the article Heat pump subsidy 2026: the new Zelená domácnostiam II.
