Heat pump or gas boiler: a comparison

Illustration for the article: Heat pump or gas boiler: a comparison

A heat pump and a gas boiler are two different ways of heating a house. A boiler produces heat by burning gas, while a heat pump transfers heat from the outdoor air using electricity. Which solution suits you better depends on the house, the heating system and energy prices.

Comparison at a glance

  • Energy source – boiler: natural gas; heat pump: electricity and heat from the air.
  • Connection – a boiler needs a gas connection and a flue; a heat pump does not.
  • Cooling – a boiler does not cool; a heat pump can, with a suitable type and system.
  • Initial investment – a heat pump usually costs more to buy.
  • Running costs – depend on gas and electricity prices, insulation and the heating water temperature.
  • Safety – with a heat pump there is no combustion in the house.

When a heat pump is suitable

  • new builds and well-insulated houses,
  • houses with underfloor heating or low-temperature radiators,
  • houses without a gas connection,
  • if you want one system for heating, hot water and cooling in summer.

When more assessment is needed

Why we do not quote blanket savings

The result depends on the specific house, its heat loss, the heating system, the system settings and current energy prices. We therefore assess the benefits for your house, not in general terms.

Subsidies

State subsidies for households may be available for heat pumps – Heat pump subsidy 2026: the new Zelená domácnostiam II.
