Installing an air conditioner in winter: is it possible and worth it?

An air conditioner can also be installed in winter. Installing outside the summer season even has advantages: more available dates, less stress and an air conditioner that is ready before the first heatwave. In winter you can also use it for heating straight away.

Myth: an air conditioner cannot be installed in winter

Installation involves fitting the units, connecting the pipes, checking the circuit for leaks and commissioning. This work is also done at low temperatures. Extreme weather may be more of a limitation – severe frost, rain or wind when working at height. In that case we adjust the date.

Advantages of installing outside the season

• more dates – demand for installations is highest in summer,
• a calm choice – you have time to decide and are not buying under the pressure of a heatwave,
• heating straight away – an air conditioner can heat in spring and autumn or as a supplement (Heating with an air conditioner: is it worth it?),
• ready for summer – you are already cool when the first heatwave comes.

What to consider for installation in winter

• the drainage of condensate and defrost water from the outdoor unit, so that it does not freeze on a path or balcony,
• placing the outdoor unit away from where snow accumulates,
• a window or balcony door is opened for a short time during installation.
