Installing an air conditioner in a prefab apartment block is routine and in most flats it can be done in one day. Before installation, however, it is a good idea to settle two things: where the outdoor unit will go and whether you need consent from the building manager or owners’ association.
Consent in an apartment building
An outdoor unit on the facade or railing changes the appearance of the building and affects common parts. That is why many apartment buildings have their own rules. Ask the building manager or the chair of the association. Read more in the article Consent to install an air conditioner in an apartment building: what to arrange.
Where to put the outdoor unit
- Loggia or balcony – the most common choice in a prefab block; the unit must have enough air.
- Facade on a bracket – when a loggia is not available; it requires safe installation and access for servicing.
- Insulated facade – the anchoring must respect the insulation and the pipe opening has to be sealed.
Routing the pipes and condensate
A refrigerant pipe, cable and condensate hose run between the indoor and outdoor units. In a prefab block, the route usually runs as short as possible through the outer wall. The condensate must be drained so that it does not drip on the neighbours – we deal with this in the design. Read more in the article Air conditioner condensate: why it forms and why an air conditioner drips.
How the installation works
- We agree on the position of the units and the pipe route.
- We cover the floor and furniture around the work area.
- We fit the brackets, drill the opening and mount the units.
- We connect the units, check the circuit for leaks and connect the electricity.
- We start up the air conditioner, explain how to operate it and tidy up.
What to prepare before installation
- free space below the place for the indoor unit,
- access to the loggia or balcony,
- the building’s consent, if required,
- information about the electrical protection, if you have it.

An outdoor unit on a higher floor
On a loggia, the unit is usually easy to install. On the facade of a higher floor, safe access has to be arranged, not only for installation but also for later servicing. It is therefore worth sending a photo of the facade before the quote, because access can affect the price.
What to watch out for in a prefab block
- Vibration and noise: the unit must be fixed firmly and with damping so that the sound does not travel into the structure.
- Window replacement or insulation: if the building is planning them, tell us, because it may affect the position of the unit.
- Electricity: we will check where to connect the unit from and whether the protection is suitable.
- Wall opening: before drilling we check the route so as not to cut through services in the wall.
