Split or multi-split air conditioning: the differences and when to choose which

Illustration for the article: Split or multi-split air conditioning: the differences and when to choose which

A split air conditioner has one indoor and one outdoor unit. A multi-split connects two or more indoor units to one shared outdoor unit. Both solutions have their advantages – the choice depends on the number of rooms, the space on the facade and how you use them.

Advantages of a split air conditioner

  • simpler design and installation,
  • each room has its own unit – if one unit fails, the others keep working,
  • the output of the outdoor unit exactly matches one room,
  • air conditioners can be added gradually.

Advantages of multi-split

  • fewer outdoor units on the facade or balcony,
  • suitable where there is little space for an outdoor unit or the apartment building requires it,
  • the indoor units can be of different types and outputs.

Limitations of multi-split

  • if the outdoor unit fails, none of the rooms work,
  • longer pipe routes from one outdoor unit to several rooms,
  • the design must take into account how many rooms will be used at the same time,
  • with multi-split, all units either cool or heat at the same time.

When to choose which solution

Split is a good choice for one or two rooms that are far apart, or if you want to start with one air conditioner and add more later.

Multi-split makes sense in a flat or house where you want to air-condition several rooms at once and do not want several outdoor units on the facade.

Two outdoor units side by side: several separate units need more space.
Two outdoor units side by side: several separate units need more space.

Practical examples

  • One bedroom in a flat: a separate split is enough.
  • A living room and two rooms in a flat with one loggia: multi-split saves space if pipes can be routed to all the rooms.
  • Ground floor and attic of a house: two separate splits may have shorter routes and each floor is independent.
  • One room today, another in a few years: the choice depends on whether you want another outdoor unit or choose a larger multi-split in advance.

What to ask during the design

  • How many indoor units can be connected and what are the longest permitted pipe routes?
  • What happens when all the rooms are running at once?
  • Can another indoor unit be added later?

According to the manufacturer’s data, up to five indoor units can be connected to a Daikin Multi outdoor unit. The specific combination depends on the outputs and the outdoor unit model.

How we approach it

In the design we assess the number and layout of the rooms, possible pipe routes and the place for the outdoor unit. We then recommend a Daikin split or multi-split system. For several rooms, see the Daikin Multi system. See also the article Air conditioning for a family house: options and recommendations or write to us.
