When cooling, an air conditioner removes moisture from the air. This condenses on the cold heat exchanger of the indoor unit as condensate and flows through a hose outside or into the drain. This is completely normal – the problem arises when the water does not drain where it should.
How condensate is drained
- by gravity – the hose runs downhill outside or into a waste pipe; the simplest solution,
- with a condensate pump – when gravity drainage is not possible, for example on an inner wall,
- into the sewer – with a trap so that no smell gets into the room.
When heating, water is produced when the outdoor unit defrosts – this also has to be considered, especially in winter.
Why water drips from an air conditioner
- a blocked drain – dirt in the tray or hose,
- poor hose gradient – water runs back or stands,
- a clogged heat exchanger and filters – ice may form and then drip,
- an incorrectly levelled unit – water does not flow into the drain,
- a faulty condensate pump, if one is used.
What to do
- Switch off the air conditioner so that the water does not damage the wall and floor.
- Check and clean the filters according to the instructions.
- If the dripping continues, book a service – we will clean and check the condensate drain and tray.
Prevention
Regular cleaning of the indoor unit, including the condensate tray, reduces the risk of blockages and smells. See air conditioner cleaning and disinfection and the article How often should you clean your air conditioner?.
