Where to place an air conditioner: indoor and outdoor unit

The right position of an air conditioner affects how evenly it cools the room, whether it blows on your head and how easily a technician can reach it for servicing. That is why our design looks for a balance between function, comfort and what the room allows.

Indoor unit – principles

  • high on the wall with free space below the ceiling according to the manufacturer’s instructions,
  • free space in front of the unit – furniture and curtains must not block the airflow,
  • not directly above a bed or desk – the air would blow on people,
  • away from heat sources – not above a radiator or cooker,
  • a short route to the outdoor unit – shorter pipes are better,
  • a way of draining condensate – ideally by gravity.

Outdoor unit – principles

  • enough air – the unit needs free space for intake and exhaust,
  • shade, if possible – direct sunlight impairs heat release,
  • access for servicing – a technician must be able to reach the unit safely,
  • consideration for neighbours – not under other people’s windows, not in narrow spaces where sound reflects,
  • firm fixing – a bracket or stand with vibration damping,
  • in winter – when heating, defrost water drains from the unit and its drainage has to be considered.

Flat, house, attic

In a prefab apartment block, the outdoor unit is most often on the loggia (Installing an air conditioner in a prefab apartment block in Bratislava: what to arrange and how it works), in a family house on the facade or on the ground (Air conditioning for a family house: options and recommendations). In an attic we also consider a floor-standing unit (Air conditioning in an attic: how to cool the hottest rooms).

We will plan the position with you

Before installation we go through the position of both units and the pipe route with you, so that the result works and looks good. Send us an enquiry – photos of the room and the balcony or facade help.
