A heat pump needs a suitable electrical supply and protection according to the requirements of the manufacturer of the specific model. Before installation, it is therefore a good idea to check the electrical installation of the house, the main breaker and also the electricity tariff.
Single-phase or three-phase
Heat pumps are made in both single-phase and three-phase versions, depending on the output and model. During the design, we check what connection you have and which variant is suitable.
Breaker and supply
- the heat pump and electric backup heater have their own protection according to the manufacturer’s data,
- the cable cross-section must match the power input and the length of the supply,
- we check whether the main house breaker is sufficient for appliances running at the same time.
Electrical work must be carried out by a professionally qualified person.
Main house breaker
If the main breaker is not sufficient, an increase is arranged with the distribution company. This may take time, so it is a good idea to start early – ideally as soon as you decide on a heat pump.
Electricity tariff for a heat pump
In the Bratislava Region, distribution is usually provided by Západoslovenská distribučná. According to its tariff overview (as of 6 November 2026), the dual-rate D3 Aktiv 2T, 2A and 2P tariffs for larger consumption have at least 8, 10 and 20 low-rate hours a day. The 2P tariff is intended for houses with electric heating and water heating. You agree the tariff with your supplier, so also check the conditions for a heat pump with them. The right tariff has a direct effect on costs – Heat pump heating costs: what increases and reduces them.
Blocking during the high rate
Some tariffs allow the distributor to block the heat pump at certain times. The system copes with this thanks to the thermal inertia of the house and hot water tank, but the controls must be set correctly.
