How to prepare your air conditioner for the summer season

Illustration for the article: How to prepare your air conditioner for the summer season

The best time to prepare an air conditioner for summer is spring – before the first heatwave and the peak demand for servicing. A few steps you can do yourself are enough, along with a professional check that you leave to a technician.

1. Clean the filters

After winter the filters may be dusty, especially if you heated with the air conditioner. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions: switch off the unit, remove the filters, vacuum or rinse them and let them dry completely. Read more in the article How often should you clean your air conditioner?.

2. Check the outdoor unit

  • remove leaves, dirt and objects from around the unit,
  • check that the unit is not damaged and is firmly fixed,
  • if you covered the unit for the winter, remove the cover before starting it.

3. Test run

Run the air conditioner in cooling mode for a few dozen minutes and check:

  • whether cold air comes from the unit,
  • whether you hear any unusual noises,
  • whether water drips from the indoor unit,
  • whether a smell comes from the unit,
  • whether an error code appears on the display.

4. Book a service in good time

During a professional service, the technician checks the operating values and cleans the unit, the condensate drain and the outdoor unit. If the air conditioner smells, also book a cleaning with disinfection. Read more on the Air conditioner service and Cleaning and disinfection pages.

5. Prepare the room too
