Weather-compensated control sets the heating water temperature according to the outdoor temperature. When it is warmer outside, the heat pump heats the water less; when it is freezing, more. The relationship between the outdoor temperature and the water temperature is determined by the heating curve. Setting it correctly is one of the most effective ways of reducing consumption.
Why it matters so much
A heat pump works more efficiently the lower the water temperature it produces. If the curve is set too high, the water is unnecessarily hot and the unit uses more electricity. If it is set too low, the house is cold. The aim is the lowest water temperature at which the house is comfortable.
How to tune the curve
- Start with the setting made by the technician at commissioning.
- Monitor the temperature in the house at different outdoor temperatures.
- If it is cold only in frost, the slope of the curve is adjusted.
- If it is cold or warm at all temperatures, the offset of the curve is adjusted.
- Always change it by only a small step and wait a few days – the house responds slowly, especially with underfloor heating.
Thermostatic heads and a room thermostat
With weather-compensated control, it is important that thermostatic heads in the rooms do not restrict the flow unnecessarily. The role of the room thermostat varies by system – we will explain it during the setup.
Night setback and frequent switching
With a heat pump and underfloor heating, large night setbacks usually do not pay off – in the morning the unit has to reheat at a higher output. Stable operation tends to be more suitable.
